Outdoor Leagues:
General
- Matches start on time. If you do not have the
minimum required players, then you forfeit games every 5 minutes
until all three are lost.
- If you can't make a game call your captain to
let him/her know. It's the captains responsibility to call All
in Play if your entire team can't play or if you don't have enough
players to play a legal game.
- Spalding and Wilson are the official balls for All in Plays
outdoor leagues.
- If a ball from another court comes onto your court,
please stop play immediately and replay the point.
Team Composition
Coed 6's
- Minimum of 4 players required.
- For 4 players: must have one player of the opposite
sex on the court at all times.
- For 5 (or more) players: must have two players
of the opposite sex on the court at all times.
Coed 3's & 4's
- Minimum of 2 players required.
- For 2 players: must have one man and one woman.
- For 3 (or more) players: must have one player
of the opposite sex on the court at all times.
Substitute Players
- Substitute players are allowed but must sign the waiver/roster for the team
- Teams can have as many substitute players as they want as long as the players come from outside the league
- If substitute players are recruited from the league that the team plays in, then the team can only
recruite a maximum of 50% of the number of players that should be on the team. For example, a team in the coed 6's league can
only recruit up to 3 players from within the league
Scoring
- All leagues play 2 games to 21 (cap at 23)
and one game to 15 (cap at 17), rally scoring. All 3 games count
in standings.
- Score sheets are at each court and are your responsibility
to fill them out legibly at the end of each game.
- Referees are not provided honor calls are expected.
Playoffs
- Top 4 teams go to play-offs.
- Players must participate in two weeks of regular
season play to be eligible to participate in playoffs.
- If you have substitute players during the season
they need to sign the waiver/roster before they play. The waiver/roster
will determine eligibility for individuals to participate in
play-off games.
Standards of Play
We follow USAV rules
for all levels of play with some exceptions as noted below based
on the level of play. We have also noted some rules that players
seem to forget.
- Let serves and foot digs are good.
- Only one service attempt is allowed.
- Foot faults occur if you step on the line or under
it while serving.
- 1st ball over may be double hit, but not lifted.
- A block does not count as the first contact.
- Blocking/attacking the serve is not allowed.
- If the line moves, the ball is in.
- Touching the net is not allowed.
Recreational
- Open hand setting the serve is allowed.
- Open hand dinks are allowed.
- Open hand sets over the net are allowed.
All Other Levels
- No hand sets off the serve.
- No open hand dinks.
- No open hand sets over the net (square or not).
Inclement Weather
In the event that the weather has the potential to cause problems
with scheduled matches, call the inclement weather line (704-625-0713) for details.
The line will be updated at 5:45 with information about your scheduled
match.
Indoor Leagues:
General
- If there is a class in progress, do not enter the gym until
the class is done.

- One certified referee will be provided for each game.
- For the recreational level: A score keeper will be provided by the team
assigned to work the match
- For all other levels: A second referee and a score keeper will be provided

- If your team does not provide people to work, your team will
forfeit all games that night and one game the following week.
Working Team
The responsibilities of the working team is as follows
Scorekeeper
- Monitor each game played and distribute points to each team
as directed by the 1st or 2nd referee.
- During each game, points will be displayed on the provided
score board
- At the end of each game, the final score will be recorded on
the provided score sheet
2nd (Down) Referee:
The 2nd referees responsibilities have been adapted from
the USAV rules and responsibilities.
24.1 LOCATION
- The second referee performs his/her functions standing outside
the playing court near the post, on the opposite side facing
the first referee.
24.2 AUTHORITY
- The second referee may, without whistling, also signal faults
outside his/her range of jurisdiction.
- The second referee controls the work of the scorer.
24.3 RESPONSIBILITIES
During the match, the second referee decides, whistles and signals:
- Penetration into the opponents court, and the space
under the net,
- Positional faults of the receiving team,
- The faulty contact of the player with the net at its lower
part or with the antenna on his/her side of the court,
- The second referee decides, whistles and signals the faulty
contact of the player with any portion of the net.
Notes/Suggestions
- Keep a hand on the net to help detect touches.
- When the action of a rally is near the net, do not follow the
ball immediately after it crosses the net.
- The 1st referee will track the ball, while you keep an eye
open for any net contact and which player committed the fault.
- Also watch for anyone crossing over the center line.
- If the foot or hand is still in contact with the center line,
it's not considered a cross over.
- After you're satisfied that there are no net or center line
violations, then help the 1st referee keep an eye on:
- Close calls near the line in case the 1st referee needs a 2nd opinion (when
vision gets screened)
- Any touch of the ball by a player when the ball lands outside the court
Playoffs

- Going under the net is not allowed (hand and foot may go over
the center line as long as they remain in the vertical plane.
No other body part may cross the line)
- No back row attack in front of the 10 foot line
- Setters coming from the back row cannot block or attack the
ball above the horizontal plane of the net.
- You must rotate
- Two time-out are allowed per game
- The playable area of the net is antenna to antenna (if the
ball goes outside (or touches) the antenna or contacts the cable/net
outside the antenna, it is out)
- The Libero position is not allowed
- Original net and under the net rules apply for all leagues
Recreational
- No Reverse Slam dunks (front row players that
hit the ball backwards with both hands or a single hand and causing
the ball to be directed onto the opponents court at a downward
angle)
- No lifts below the knees (any player using an open hand to
catch and throw the ball into play)
All other levels
- No rotation necessary on first serve of the game.
Facility Obstacles
- Ceiling and all connected items are playable
- Backboards and angle supports are referees discretion
as to whether or not a play could have been made
- Bleachers and walls are out
- The curtain bar is a replay if it is contacted within the playable
area of the net and is deemed by the referee that the ball could
have been played.
These rules are subject to change at All in Plays discretion.
